Alexander Street Press launches free search platform integrating all video products

Libraries with access to Alexander Street Press video collections can now cross-search all of them in one place, with the new Academic Video Online platform. The new video cross-search tool is free to users of Alexander Street video.

“The new Academic Video Online cross-search will change the way people use academic video in teaching and learning,” said Eileen Lawrence, Vice President, Sales and Marketing. Academic Video Online integrates all the features within individual Alexander Street video collections—synchronized scrolling transcripts; tools to make clips and playlists; the ability to search a transcript while watching and to jump forward and backward to your search hits; permanent URLs for all videos, clips and playlists; and much more. Users also can now explore dozens of disciplines in a single search.

Alexander Street offers streaming video covering the performing arts, nursing, counselling therapy, business and economics, science, art and architecture, music, and other areas. There are more than 10,000 video titles within Academic Video Online right now, with videos continually added. By 2013, Academic Video Online will offer more than 22,000 titles.

“We’re building a virtual city of video,” said Stephen Rhind-Tutt, President of Alexander Street. “We’re teaching a generation of visual learners who have declared video their format of choice, and Academic Video Online gives both educators and learners the tools to make the most of this medium.”

Libraries can buy or subscribe to individual video collections or subscribe to VAST, a package of 21 discipline collections, the best value. VAST offers 10,000 video titles and will grow to more than 22,000 titles by 2013. It contains all the videos from 21 of Alexander Street’s individual collections, all cross-searchable, making it a one-stop, multidisciplinary solution for libraries. VAST covers areas as diverse as science, architecture and performing arts. Every video is indexed to reflect important search elements of its unique discipline collection, allowing for both general searching of all videos and advanced, in-depth searching of specific disciplines.

“VAST lets the library serve every faculty member and patron because of the broad coverage,” said Eileen Lawrence, Vice President, Sales and Marketing. “With content from top producers like BBC, PBS, A&E, and Filmakers Library, and videos that have won Emmys and other major awards, VAST offers the best video. And it’s delivered the best way, with Alexander Street’s famous functionality, including custom clip-making and playlist tools, coursepack compatibility, and much more.”

Discipline collections included in VAST are: Area Studies Video Online, Art and Architecture Video Online, Business and Economics in Video, Counselling and Therapy in Video, Ethnic Studies Video Online, Ethnographic Video Online, Health and Healthcare in Video, Humanities Video Online, Politics and Current Affairs Video Online, Science Video Online, World History in Video, and World Languages and Literature in Video.
