Faculty of 1000 granting free access to developing countries in association with the World Health Organisation

Faculty of 1000, the new online literature evaluation service published by BioMed Central, is planning to make itself freely available to institutions in the world's poorest countries through the World Health Organisation's Access to Research Initiative. Furthermore, the publisher will offer researchers involved with Faculty of 1000 the chance to nominate institutions in other developing countries for a sponsored free subscription.
Faculty of 1000 systematically highlights and evaluates the most interesting papers published in the biological sciences, based on the recommendations of over 1,400 leading scientists. The service was launched at the start of the year with the aim of making it easier for life science researchers to keep abreast of the most important published papers. Over 250 institutions have signed up to trial the service in the first three months following its launch.

Many Asian countries qualify for free or reduced subscriptions

The World Health Organisation's Access to Research Initiative commits Faculty of 1000 to giving free access to countries that have a per capita GNP less than USD1,000. Eligible countries in Asia are: Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal and Vietnam. In addition, institutions in countries that have a per capita GNP between USD1,000 and USD9,265 per annum are eligible for sponsorship by Faculty of 1000 members, who can nominate worthy institutions that they feel would appreciate a free subscription.

In Asia these countries are: Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand. In the absence of a nomination, institutions in these countries will be offered substantially discounted prices. As a direct consequence of this arrangement, many thousands of researchers in developing countries will have access to Faculty of 1000 evaluations on the most important research published in the life sciences.
