Wiley InterScience launches OnlineBooks

Wiley InterScience has launched Wiley InterScience OnlineBooks , an extensive database of scientific, technical, and medical (STM) content that will be available as part of the global publisher's Wiley InterScience online service.
"With the launch of OnlineBooks, Wiley is pleased to be the first STM publisher to deliver to the desktops of its customers a fully searchable and browseable database that integrates the complete content of its scientific, technical, and medical books with that of its online journals and reference works," said Mr. St. John Vice President and General Manager. "Wiley InterScience OnlineBooks significantly enhances search capabilities, enabling millions of scientists, researchers, academics, and professionals world wide to access the body of scientific literature they need for their work, as soon as it is available, wherever, whenever, and in whatever format they want it."

Fully searchable and integrated online content

Unlike traditional e-books, OnlineBooks offers full searchable and integrated online content. "Delivering specific content together with snapshot chapter summaries, OnlineBooks is another Wiley InterScience building-block helping to make research all the more seamless and time efficient for our customers," said Mr St. John. "OnlineBooks is also designed to deliver significant value to librarians, who traditionally purchased these works in their print form," said Mr St. John. Rather than purchasing multiple print copies for their holdings, a license will provide for unlimited on-line access by authorised users. In addition, comprehensive usage figures will assist librarians in future collection management decisions. "This equates to a means of containing costs while, at the same time, being able to provide a richer source of quality research material at their staff and students' fingertips."

The database will integrate the content of Wiley InterScience journals and reference works with more than 200 of Wiley's scientific, technical, and medical titles by the end of 2002. It will be segmented into three main subject collections, each of which will be further divided into three smaller collections: Chemistry: organic & biochemistry, polymers, material science & industrial chemistry, analytical chemistry; Life and Medical Sciences: medicine, clinical trials & pharmacology, molecular biology; Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications: communications technology; wireless, and electrical engineering.

Unlimited access to search and browse

Access will be licensed on an annual basis to one or more of these collections and will be available on a permanently for an ongoing maintenance fee. Subscriptions will include unlimited access to search and browse content, integrated with Wiley InterScience journals and reference works. The innovative licensing model provides for unlimited concurrent usage by users at a licensed institution. Individual book titles will not initially be available.

Wiley InterScience, Wiley's online content service, was launched in the fall of 1997 to respond to the demand for important, reliable, and timely scientific, technical, medical and professional information. Since January 7, 1999, more than 300 journals in full text dating back to January 1997, as well as the full range of services available from Wiley InterScience, are accessible to subscribers and their authorised users. Beginning in the year 2000, Wiley InterScience is also the online platform for major reference works, most recently including the Current Protocols Online laboratory manuals series and Patty's Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology.
