Curtin links with Ex Libris in unique partnership

In an Australian first, a world wide developer of information software and a university library have formed a partnership that will improve access to scholarly information and the delivery of other library services. "The partnership is to install, design, develop, and test software and other products from Ex Libris in close consultation with Curtin University of Technology's Library and Information Service (LIS) - a library that has significant expertise in digitisation and networked scholarly information," explained Michael McLellan, General Manager of Ex Libris (Australia).
The arrangement calls for the installation of the ALEPH 500 library system as well as Metalib/SFX and DigiTool for Curtin's Library and Information Service. Work will begin immediately and is expected to be completed before the start of the second semester in 2002.

 Leverage investment on scholarly information

"Curtin University of Technology's Library and Information Service is Ex Libris's first Premier Partner in Australia, and our first partner world wide to use the full product range offered by Ex Libris to support teaching, learning, and research. The partnership offers the University the opportunity to leverage its investment in scholarly information through the innovative use of technology to support flexible, online learning. Curtin University will become a reference site for other libraries and archives around the world through its participation in the leading edge work of designing scholarly information systems for the twenty-first century," Mr. McLellan said.

Dr. Vicki Williamson, University Librarian, commented, "We look forward to a most productive partnership with Ex Libris that will benefit our clients and take LIS staff down new and exciting pathways. This arrangement is key to the future of Curtin's Library and Information Service and our role in supporting the University's strategic directions for the development of on-line learning.

Early adoption of a digitisation strategy

"The establishment of the partnership recognises our early adoption of a digitisation strategy," Dr Williamson added. "Our work on the Electronic Research Archives (ERA) at the John Curtin Prime Ministerial Library, digital theses, Web-based delivery of exam papers, and online information literacy programmes has Curtin LIS staff well placed to make a significant contribution to the development work of Ex Libris."

The Ex Libris Premier Partner Program has been designed for those libraries that have shown leadership in the provision of library and information services and that wish to develop a mutually beneficial and productive working relationship with their primary library system vendor. Premier partnerships are normally developed for the specific goal of doing mutual work towards a common set of goals, typically in the area of product development. "We are very excited about working in partnership with such a forward-looking and dynamic company that shares our vision for the future of electronic library services," Dr Williamson concluded.
