ISI Essential Science IndicatorsSM identifies research excellence in the People's Republic of China
ISI Web of KnowledgeSM Evaluation Tool Measures Research Trends and Performance

ISI's Web of Knowledge evaluation tool - ISI Essential Science Indicators - has identified the People's Republic of China as having significant impact and influence on scientific research world wide. Based on the number of citations to papers indexed from 1991 through February 2001, the People's Republic of China ranks among the top ten countries world wide in the fields of Materials Science and Mathematics. In the field of Physics, the People's Republic of China is twelfth, and in Chemistry fifteenth.

As part of ISI Web of Knowledge that integrates the ISI Web of Science® and ISI Current Contents Connect® with additional sources of content, ISI Essential Science Indicators allows for the measurement of scientific trends and ranks the performance of academic institutions, countries, researchers, corporations, journals, and papers by specific fields.

Determine impact on science within a field

Academic institutions, governments, researchers, corporations, and journal publishers can use ISI Essential Science Indicators to determine their impact on science within a field, and the impact of other countries, colleagues, competitors and journals, providing insight into pivotal influences and research trends.

Editorial content from issues of the ISI newsletter, Science Watch®, is also available through ISI Essential Science Indicators, as well as commentaries on the most cited authors, journals, and institutions, and on research trends from the scientific community itself.

Adding to its strength, the integration of ISI Essential Science Indicators within ISI Web of Knowledge allows for seamless links from an evaluated document in ISI Essential Science Indicators to the bibliographic and citation information contained within the ISI Web of Science, and out to full text. Currently, nearly 6 million record links are available between the ISI Web of Science and the full text documents of journal articles and other databases.

 Compile and rank citations

ISI Essential Science Indicators is based on citations - references by scientific authors to prior influences that are published with scholarly journal articles. Citations are a form of intellectual debt. For decades, many scholars have utilised citation data for more than retrieval. They have found this information vital for analytical purposes. ISI Essential Science Indicators compiles and ranks citations to form the basis for these essential science performance statistics and trends data, and harnesses the strength of the Internet to deliver this invaluable information to the desktop.

ISI Web of Knowledge is a single, sophisticated platform that extends and deepens the research coverage available through one resource by integrating journal, patent, proceedings, chemistry, and life sciences literature with Web resources and other scholarly data. Key content can be cross-searched in the ISI Web of Knowledge. Additionally, the full text of evaluated Web sites is fully searchable through ISI Current Contents Connect.
