Wiley, LabBook Partner to Deliver Comprehensive Life Science Informatics Solutions

Global publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc., and LabBook, Inc., an innovative life sciences informatics company, will deliver an end-to-end solution consisting of enabling software and scientific content that will provide life science researchers flexible access to essential information in a single, unified desktop environment.
The alliance brings together LabBook's desktop data integration and visualisation software with the content-rich Wiley InterScience (www.interscience.wiley.com ), Wiley's Web-based offering of more than 300 scientific, technical, and medical journals and major reference works, including Wiley's highly regarded Current Protocols laboratory manuals. LabBook's enabling software maximises the value of such scientific content for the end user, by delivering it as "live" reusable documents in a highly visual and interactive discovery environment, integrated with bioinformatic data.

"Integration of targeted information and data is a fundamental step in the drug discovery process, and we believe the bundling of LabBook's innovative technology with Wiley's premier research content and laboratory protocols will increase the efficiencies of this process for the life science researcher," said Dr. Shawn J. Green, CEO of LabBook.

Promote the use of open standards

The Wiley-LabBook alliance will promote the use of open standards and the development of standards-based applications to help fuel ongoing innovations in the life sciences. By combining an open and widely accepted eXtensible Markup Language (XML) standard for bioinformatics, Bioinformatics Sequence Markup Language (BSML), with a biology-smart browser, Genomic XML BrowserTM and XML converters, LabBook has created the ideal "front-end" for life science informatics that enables dynamic integration and annotation of diverse databases.

"LabBook's enabling software adds power to the wealth of comprehensive and timely information and the advanced search, navigation, and retrieval capabilities of Wiley InterScience." said Eric A. Swanson, Senior Vice President, Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishing, John Wiley & Sons, Inc. "Our relationship with LabBook represents another important step by Wiley to deliver our content online in a manner that accelerates the discovery process for researchers in commercial, academic, and government settings. We look forward to partnering with LabBook in the development, marketing, and distribution of sophisticated informatics-based knowledge management solutions suited to the diverse needs of our customers."

Provide researchers with a web workspace

Wiley's delivery of Current Protocols content online, both through its Wiley InterScience platform and integrated within LabBook's software environment, will provide researchers with a web workspace for online access to Current Protocols' carefully annotated, step-by-step procedures of the best scientific methods, contributed by hundreds of highly respected investigators from various scientific fields. Published by Wiley since 1987, starting with Current Protocols in Molecular Biology, the protocols are carefully selected for maximum applicability, lab-tested in leading laboratories, and thoroughly scrutinized by expert editorial boards to ensure easy duplication in any lab. With their regular updates, these publications constantly evolve and change to meet the needs of the scientific research community.

Wiley InterScience was launched in the fall of 1997 to meet the growing world wide demand for important, reliable, and timely scientific, technical, medical and professional information. More than 300 journals in full text dating back to January 1997 and a number of major reference works are now available online via Wiley InterScience, to licensees and their authorised users. A range of licensing options, including Basic Access and Enhanced Access Licenses, are offered to meet the needs of both small and large institutional customers. Wiley InterScience also provides Web access for members of scientific societies to their peer-reviewed professional journals published with Wiley, as well as Web-based access, for guest and other users, to cited journal content linked via CrossRef (www.crossref.org ), a publishing industry initiative in which Wiley has played a leadership role.
