The findings are to be published in three
phases with the first phase, completed in May 2001,
concentrating on 'subscription versus document delivery'. The
second phase will focus on the 'study of end user needs and behaviour
in terms of electronic article
delivery'. The final phase will pull all the research and findings
together to form an 'integration and summary'.
Highly
confusing and complex
"The whole area of subscriptions,
document delivery, interlibrary loan and consortia
deals has
become highly confusing and complex," comments Anthony Pearce, Chair of the ingenta
institute. "There are no recent studies which bring all
the issues together in an independent and impartial way. The ingenta
institute aims to do
this."

The year long research project will form the
basis of a meeting, to be held at the
Royal Society on 25th September in London and later this autumn in
Boston, USA. A report of the findings will be available to all
interested parties by late 2001.
The institute conducts its research from
its Oxford base and is funded by ingenta, the world's largest
Web resource for the search and delivery of research articles.
In 2000, the ingenta institute focused on distance learning
and held a seminar entitled 'The School For Life: The
Electronic Future of Higher Education And Long-Life Learning'.
